Key Achievements in Malaria Elimination across the GMS Region (2014-2023) 25.04.2024

On this World Malaria Day, marked each year on 25th April, we would like to highlight our continued commitment and the key results we have delivered towards eliminating malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

The Regional Artemisinin-Resistance Initiative Towards Elimination of Malaria (RAI) is a programme that aims to escalate progress towards eliminating malaria in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. As the Regional Principal Recipient, UNOPS Asia Regional Health Cluster (ARHC) has managed US$560.1 million for 2014-2023 to accelerate the elimination of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria in the five GMS countries. The RAI was expanded for three years (2024–2026) under the fourth phase, the RAI4-Elimination (RAI4E), with a grant approval value of US$146.3 million. The total grant value of the RAI grants from 2014 to 2026 is US$706.4 million.

UNOPS ARHC is proud to highlight our unwavering commitment and the significant progress we have achieved towards eliminating malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion. The Greater Mekong Subregion has made significant strides towards malaria control and elimination.

UNOPS ARHC is working closely with the national malaria programmes and sub-recipients to continue to support increased malaria service coverage for remote populations in border areas and other at-risk populations, as well as case management through health volunteers and the strengthening of national surveillance systems.

Between 2014 and 2023 in the Greater Mekong Subregion, the RAI programme contributed the following towards the elimination of malaria:

  • 60.1 million+ people tested for malaria
  • 2.6 million+ people treated for malaria
  • 33.2 million+ insecticide-treated bed nets distributed
  • 34,388+ volunteers trained, and malaria posts established
